Florida Gothic by Mitzi Szereto6/27/2023 Even if you aren’t a horror aficionado, you’ll have a gruesomely good time reading it. So am I using my blog to promote my new book? You bet! If you enjoy horror, I’m convinced you’ll enjoy Florida Gothic. It takes a highly skilled, intelligent writer with impeccable control of her craft to keep me glued to the page, and I was. Set against the “glamorous” backdrop of South Florida (think heat, sun, sweat, beaches, drugs, voodoo, Cuban food, and Ernesto’s ever-present cucarachas), Florida Gothic offers what you won’t typically find in those tourist guidebooks. Mitzi Szereto carefully guides us through the very nasty underbelly of the darkest of Miami’s dark side in a gritty tale where love is scarce and violence rules 24/7. Though I’d like to think I’m better looking. I’ve crossed over into horror on several projects, though technically speaking, it’s probably safe to say that my new book release Florida Gothic is my first full-on, guts-on-the-table, cringing-in-the-corner horror novel. We get to see the “hero” of Florida Gothic shambling through life (or make that DEATH) as he seeks payback for all the wrongs that have been committed against him. Like this book’s author, Ernesto’s no shrinking violet either. Hang on, did someone say alligator? There just so happens to be one in the book! And it’s because of him (or her?) that events move in a particular direction, shaping the fate of our unlucky protagonist, Ernesto Martinez. Ernesto’s mad as hell – and he’s not gonna take it anymore! I am legend matheson6/26/2023 Come 2007, however, CGI was the mainstream method for creating movie monsters, and the digital Darkseekers solidified I Am Legend as less of a horror film and more of a generic action movie. This would have given Scott's I Am Legend a classic zombie-horror movie feel, much like the iconic work of George Romero. Any of those three approaches, however, would have relied on practical effects rather than CGI. The designers mention that, at the time they were making these Darkseeker models, they didn't know whether they would be implemented in the film as bodysuits, prosthetics, or animatronics. That queue along with the application of the makeup on actual models' faces further emphasizes the uncanny humanity still lingering in the Darkseekers' eyes. Gillis and Woodruff also say that Scott advised them to look at 17th-century wax sculptures for inspiration. The artists explain that they covered the Darkseekers with a silicone membrane, making them appear scrawny to the point of translucence. In the images, one can see the attention that Gillis and Woodruff put into the Darkseekers' decaying teeth, pale veins, and rotting skin. However, the physical sculptures offer additional depth and texture to the beings. Like Scott and Despretz's sketches, the prosthetic Darkseekers appear as walking, bony corpses. In 2012, ADI released a video with Gillis and Woodruff sharing pictures of their designs, and the results are appropriately terrifying. The sheriff even calls her a "one-woman crime wave." She may indeed seem to be as tough as a boot - after the first summer, Grandma doesn't even meet the kids at the train station she figures that they can find their own way to her house, but Joey, Mary Alice, and the reader soon come to realize that she's something of an old softy inside. Grandma is not above stretching the truth or stealing borrowing someone's boat to achieve her goals. Over the years, Grandma Dowdel gets the kids involved in all sorts of hilarious adventures - catching criminals, helping some star-crossed lovers elope, and showing up the snooty banker's wife. As the years went by though, Mary Alice and I grew up, and though Grandma never changed, we'd seem to see a different woman every summer. And tough! She was tough as an old boot, or so we thought. She was old too, or so we thought - old as the hills. She was so big and the town was so small. "I don't think Grandma's a very good influence on us," Mary Alice said.Įvery August, Joey Dowdel and his kid sister Mary Alice spend a week at their Granny's house. John dies at the end of this book6/25/2023 After taking a drug called ‘soy sauce’ they find they can see things that most people can’t – such as shadow people and electric jellyfish – and must try and protect their friends from the forces of darkness, which are trying to infiltrate earth. It’s about a young man named David and his friend John, who become accidentally involved in a battle between good and evil. John Dies at the End is unlike anything I usually read (and probably also unlike anything I will ever read again). But as you read about these terrible events and the very dark epoch the world is about to enter as a result, it is crucial you keep one thing in mind: NONE OF THIS IS MY FAULT. I’m sorry to have involved you in this, I really am. Unfortunately for us, if you make the right choice, we’ll have a much harder time explaining how to fight off the otherworldly invasion currently threatening to enslave humanity. John and I never had the chance to say no. The drug is called soy sauce, and it gives users a window into another dimension. You may not want to know about the things you’ll read on these pages, about the sauce, about Korrok, about the invasion, and the future. You should not have touched this book with your bare hands. This is not really a summary, but it’s what it says on the back cover: This book has been on my radar for a while, and when I saw it in a charity chop for £2 I had to buy it. Dead Connection by Charlie Price6/25/2023 Throughout this suspenseful book, Murray and Gates work separately to discover Nikki's fate, confronting some of their own demons in the process. Deputy sheriff Gates thinks that a troubled 22-year-old who has come through social services may know more than anyone suspects. Murray, a loner in high school who quietly converses with the spirits of dead children and adolescents in the local cemetery, hears a new voice pleading for help, and wonders whether it could be Nikki. In brief, compulsively readable chapters, the author shifts the perspective among various interested parties. When Nikki vanishes without a trace, her disappearance devastates the community. This superb debut novel concerns two very different individuals trying to discover the fate of a high school cheerleader who disappeared from a small California town. About the Book Originally published in the U.S. My book that I’m going to recommend is the children’s novel ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’, by Roald Dahl. Whiskey had none of these disadvantages and was, accordingly, the libation of choice. Bulky, heavy, and liable to spoil en route, beer required brewers to work close to sizeable populations of thirsty consumers. Most of these saloons served some form of whiskey, which was more efficient and cost-effective to transport than kegs of beer. Saloons were often the first establishments in camp-even when calling them an “establishment” might mean stretching the truth as taut as the canvas on their tent frames. Olive kitteridge review6/24/2023 There was a time when such realists got dinged on our report cards for what was termed “an attitude problem” now they simply call us “haters.” The chipperest among us envision and achieve success, reserving special pity for the cynics, the cranks, the doubters. Celebrities speak candidly of ways they’ve learned to shun “negativity.” Bad news is buffed to a shine, vanquished by yoga and kale smoothies and daily affirmation. Football games can be won by banishing negative thoughts and asking for divine intervention. Cancer can be willed away by enough pink ribbons. She seems like such an unpleasant and perplexing person, Olive Kitteridge, until you start to recognize yourself in her.Īmerican culture, after all, has spent considerable time and money promoting a positive attitude in all things, as if good cheer can solve any problem. |
